No Time for Goodbye

Kestrel

It was nothing personal.

At least, that's what Draven had said. He didn’t kidnap me because of anything I’d done. I’m bait, I told myself, and I’m leading my friends to their deaths.

“Please don’t do this,” I begged, my voice pitchy and wet. “It’s one thing to kill me, but to use me so you can kill everyone I love—it’s pure evil. You’re not doing this for self-preservation. You’re not acting in defense. You'll be a murderer, and you’re assisting in the murder of innocent people. I never did anything to deserve to die, and neither did they!”

“I don’t care what you think I am,” Draven said, his voice monotone.

“What do you think you are!?” I shouted. I no longer kept my emotions in check. “What sort of a man kidnaps a girl from her bedroom so that her friends come looking for her so he can kill them too!”

“I won’t be the one to kill them. I’m only assigned to take you and kill you and leave you in a place they’re sure to find.” He shrugged. “I’ll be back in Rock Ridge by then. With Austin left vulnerable, they’ll need me in the assault.”

Tears streamed down my face. Assault on the Wyatt Mansion?

“I cheered for you once,” I whispered. “You could have been a hero, but instead, you chose to be dark and twisted and malicious.” He didn't reply, and I couldn’t believe he hadn’t gagged me yet. “When did it happen?” I choked out. “A man with a conscience and a soul couldn’t do this. So, when did it happen? When did you lose your soul?”

Draven slammed on the brakes, and I had no time to steady myself as I pitched forward toward the backside of the seats. He aggressively put the car in park, and I held my breath. Heaving a sigh, he pulled a strip of cloth from the front seat. “You let me tie this on, or I’ll have to bind your arms and legs first, and then tie it on. Either way, you’re shutting up.”

“Why? Because I’m right? Because the truth hurts?”

Suddenly, he reached back for me, and I fought him with every ounce of energy I had. I fought him because even though there wasn’t even a sliver of a chance that I would succeed, I had to try. I thrashed my arms and screamed and hit him whenever possible while he pulled me out of the car. Even with the dirt flying into my eyes, I scrambled to my feet until he grabbed me and forced me face down, belly to the ground. He calmly, but forcibly, tied my wrists together behind my back, and then, with one of his knees pinning me down, he tied my ankles together.

I could hardly breathe when he flipped me over. For a moment, he and I locked eyes. Surprisingly, I didn’t find hatred or malice in them. In fact, he almost looked sorry. He reached up with another long strip of cloth
